Regional Rights Training Begins in Bangkok

There are 4.9 million people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in Asia and the Pacific today. For this group, HIV-related stigma is pervasive, as is HIV-related discrimination in private and public settings. Discrimination and stigma have a wide array of negative consequences, but discrimination in healthcare settings is particularly egregious, as such practices prevent access to basic, sometimes life-saving, care for millions of people.

Recognizing this as a crucial issue in the region, Asia Catalyst launches its Regional Rights Training Program this weekend, with a core focus on ending discrimination against PLHIV in healthcare settings.

[COMMENTARY] Five Years of Inciting Nonprofit Stability

In November 2006, Chinese AIDS activist Li Dan sent me an email in New York. I had met this young Chinese PhD student turned AIDS activist once or twice, most recently at a dinner honoring him as a recipient of the Reebok Human Rights Award.

“We’re thinking of starting an AIDS law center in Beijing,” he wrote in his message. “Do you know anyone who might be interested?”

I did – in fact, I had just come home from having coffee with Jonathan Cohen of the Open Society Institute, who had mentioned an interest in funding an AIDS law project in China. That project launched both Li Dan’s Korekata AIDS Law Center and Asia Catalyst.

[NEWS] Shanghai Daily Highlights Red Ribbon Home

We’re delighted to see the fine work of Red Ribbon Home was featured in the Shanghai Daily on December 1, World AIDS Day. As the Daily write, Red Ribbon Home was founded by Zhang Lin, a woman living with HIV/AIDS, in Ruili, Yunnan. Red Ribbon Home provides frontline services to people living with HIV/AIDS, and holds social activities to provide a safe space for the community to connect with one another.

Red Ribbon Home was selected as a member of Asia Catalyst’s 2012 NGO Leadership Cohort program, which is training ten grassroots health rights groups in organizational management and advocacy skills.

Change It: A Rights Curriculum for Grassroots Groups. The Human Rights
Mission Kit, which you can download here, is a
collection of easy-to-follow steps, worksheets and templates groups can use at
home to start their own human rights research.
