[NEWS] Asia Catalyst in the People’s Daily

It’s not every day that Asia Catalyst appears in the Wall Street Journal…or the People’s Daily, the official organ of the Chinese Communist Party. It was a pleasant surprise, then, when both happened in the same week.

Here’s a link to an article about Chinese civil rights group Tianxia Gong and their campaign to end employment-related discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in China. Staff of the grassroots NGO asked friends and supporters to pose for the camera with signs reading “PLWHA can be teachers” and “End discrimination against PLWHA”. UNAIDS picked it up, and over 12,000 people around the country have had their photos taken. We are honored to be part of this important campaign.

[NEWS] South African NGOs Letter on Tian Xi

Asia Catalyst supported a group of Chinese AIDS activists to participate in the 2009 International Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific in Bali. Tian Xi is in the back row, third from left.

South African AIDS NGOs have spoken out several times to protest the detention of Henan AIDS activist Tian Xi. Tian Xi is still awaiting a decision on his trial for “intentional destruction of property”.

[COMMENTARY] China’s New Nonprofit Regulations: Season of Instability

Since March 2010, we’ve received a flurry of calls and
emails from reporters, donors and lawyers asking about the new regulations on NGOs
in China. Here’s our take on the regulations that have been
causing trans-Pacific headaches, and a few thoughts on what this means for
Chinese NGOs in the future.
